Graham is the owner of the Irish Experience and he tells us how he came up with the idea of the Irish Experience, Wexford. I had always been in to outdoor activities and adventures. I loved hill walking and kayaking. When I was growing up this didn’t seem like a career option. I have learned a lot from other countries, I have been on a lot of adventures! One of the coolest places I have ever been on an adventure was ‘The Grey Dogs’ between the islands of Lunga and Scarba on the western isles of Scotland. The Grey Dogs is a huge tidal race that turns the sea into a giant fast flowing river, creating its own waves and whirlpools. The whirlpools were forming all around us as we paddled through the narrow island channel. It was both frightening and amazing! Don’t worry, we don’t get anything like that on our tours!!! I take a lot of inspiration and ideas from other countries and their outdoor activities. I spent a lot of time in New Zealand. The idea of the Irish experience was born in New Zealand and this was due to the similarities between Ireland and New Zealand. When I was there, I noticed how much further ahead in adventure tourism they were and it just dawned on me that we are completely missing the trick here! We are so lucky to have such beautiful landscapes and coastline in Wexford so why was there no big adventures here. I put all my knowledge together and brought it back to Wexford to offer the Irish Experience.
Why did you bring the experience to County Wexford?
Wexford was always known as a great beach holiday destination and we wanted to offer water activities and adventures to the tourists that come and visit and holiday here. We are a county that has everything, we need to show everyone how unique we really are here. We wanted to showcase Wexford from a different point of view. Sometimes when you think of outdoor activities and adventures you think of the West of Ireland but we offer so much of it here in Wexford! We have so much to offer here at the Irish experience and one of our most popular activities is our sea cave kayaking. Sea cave kayaking is completely different every time you take part, sea kayaking is so dynamic and it changes all of the time, there are so many different factors in play. The tide height can change the experience of the landscape. On this adventure you are traversing craggy headlands, under sea cliffs in to sea caves, through cracks and crevices. It is a real adventure!
